PRELIMINARY EXERCISES

CAMERA ANGLES

I have studied camera angles by reading Daniel Chandler's website The Grammar of Television and Film

COMIC LIFE

I put together these photos and camera angles together with my knowledge of camera angles in media studies, making Sam appear smaller and bigger in certain angles to change his physical appearance. For example I have taken a long shot to make Sam look smaller in the top left photo, by using my knowledge of camera angles.

CREATION OF PRODUCTION COMPANY LOGOS

ON THE SET

Brief account of learning to use the cameras and tripods, what filming terminology is to use on set and good practise in editing this account is about what I learnt and what equipment we were shown how to use the Canon cameras and Manfrotto tripods.

Cameras and tripods. In groups we passed the camera around and each of us practised how to handle a camera, insert a battery and memory card. When you pass the camera we communicated with each other so we wouldn't drop the cameras. We learned how to set up a tripod using the 'bubble', so we know it's balanced and focused. We explored how to focus the camera. We also learnt how to change the exposure.

White Balance (WB). Is the process of removing unrealistic colour casts, meaning that objects will appear white in person are rendered white in the photo. Proper camera white balance has to take into account the 'colour temperature' of a light source, which refers to the relative warmth or coolness of white light. You adjust it by selecting the 'WB' on the camera, it will then come up with little pictures representing different colour tones that are used in different lights giving a more realistic effect.

180-degree rule. We learned about the 180 degree rule, which is a cinematography guideline that states that two characters in the scene should maintain the same left/right relationship to one another. When the camera passes over the invisible axis connecting the two subjects, it is called crossing the line and the shot becomes what is called a reverse angle.

On Set. We learnt the terminology used in the film industry on set. The director shouts 'Standby' before filming to ensure that everyone is ready when they are, they reply 'Standing by'.
When the director shouts 'Rolling', everyone on set must be quiet, then when they shout 'Action' which tells the actors to start. After the shoot, the director has said the last 'Cut', they will say 'Strike the kit'  which is the crews cue to pack away, put the batteries on charge and ensure the footage has been uploaded.

Good practise in editing. We are using Final Cut Pro and iMovie on the iMacs in the Media studio. When uploading our footage we should create a folder to keep the shots. These folders are called bins and the unedited footage from cameras are called rushes

CONTINUITY EXERCISE

In this clip i filmed my friend Sharpie to demonstrate my knowledge of camera angles, filming and editing skills. I edited this clip using iMovie which is an editing software that is only on apple products. I use eight different types of camera angles. With two of my friends from within my class we created this "short film". This was to demonstrate our knowledge and use of camera angles and editing skills. Potentially not our acting skills. Together we came up with the idea of the story line, each of us adding our knowledge up to use of camera angles and of course the editing. The plot of our "short film" was a girl within school that has broken the rules and gets her phone confiscated. In said film we have an establishing shot of the teacher coming in and snatching the phone of the pupil. We also used the POV (point of view) shot during the dialog between the two girls. Some other shots include; a long shot of the teacher entering the staffroom, a higher angle of the girls climbing the stairs, a low shot of the girls hurdling the fence and a close up of the girls finally snatching the phone back. We filmed the "short film" on our phones and used iMovie to edit the clips. Personally I really enjoyed this exercise and it was a really good way of learning new editing skills through my friends.

OPENING SEQUENCE AND TABLETOP EXERCISE

ALWAYS FOREVER

Here is my start of the film exercise that I completed with a group within my class. We came up with a story line which is illustrated through the items/props on the tabletop. We used a range of camera angles including a long shot from within the live action section of the opening sequence and a POV (point of view) shot again from both the live action and the table top. We had a small section with live action that included the two 'main characters'. I was inspired by the opening sequence to kill a mockingbird, the multiple use of angles, the child humming in the background and the use of props all put together looked truly amazing. I wanted to achieve this for my own opening sequence I was very proud whit how my opening sequence came out and my friends in which I worked with should be very proud too.

RESEARCH
We viewed three examples of opening sequences filmed in in a similar 'table top' style.
Using art of the title, we watched Delicatessen (1991, Jean-Pierre Jeunet) and noticed how its inventive camerawork tells the story and set up the theme. Another excellent title sequence is was that of To Kill A Mockingbird. We also reviewed last years students. We then use these as an inspiration to create an original title sequence in groups by setting up mise-en-scene using props from out prop collection.

PLANNING
Before we started filming, we laid out all the props that were elements of our film narratives mise-en-scene on the table. We also research and discussed audio for the soundtrack of the opening sequence. The option for our title sequence uses the soundtrack Always Forever by the Cults. This soundtrack really highlights the storyline and it connects with the props on the tabletop. It also matches the name of the 'film'.

FILMING
We filmed the 'live action' element, uploaded the footage into the editing software in which was iMovie, using this editing software we planned out titles, credits, special effects and the soundtrack.
My friends participated with some of the acting and I mostly directed and filmed them.
