1 CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

MY FIRST CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION

CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION 1: How does your film opening use or challenge conventions?

The film opening featured a BBFC age-rating. Our film opening was rated 15. Rated 15 films, videos and downloads can contain strong material including: strong swearing, strong horror and strong violence. The production company ident then follows the BBFC. Hill Limitless and Levine Loops. Hill Limitless in a bold font with a dark background, behind the lettering 'Hill Limitless' is and infinity sign. Levine Loops logo is Yin-Yang (also known as the Tai Chi symbol). The film opens with an establishing shot of a pin board with pictures of a girl and a MRI of a brain along with a map, setting the scene. From the start the genre will be signalled by the mise-en-scene (is a term used to describe the setting of a scene in a play or a film). The lighting was dimmed, there was orchestral music with a strong driving pulse driving the action; there was also a voice over of a woman whose identity is unknown. The narrative was made simple, there is the antagonist in which is this mysterious woman and the protagonist that appears to be the girl on the pinboard. The antagonists being Grace C (myself) and Ollie H, the protagonist being Millie L. The sound track in which is the orchestral music with the driving pulse assists in driving the action and building the tension for the audience. Other sounds used include: camera clicks, a pulse (a heartbeat), analytic sounds of a computer database, a scream, suspenseful music and Lazy by Bruno Mars. Our credits include the main director was Ollie H who also played the antagonist (villain/mysterious man), Myself antagonist (voice used during the opening) and Olivia D took charge of the behind the scenes photos and writing ups, Millie L the protagonist and Ollie H produced both of the production logos, Ollie H also took the large responsibility of most of the editing.

The film title significance the font is bold and well representative of the film itself. The film is called 'Extraction'. Extraction is the action of extracting something, especially using effort or force, we represented this within our film title. The font creates the boldness and the force which is significant because it refers back to the force and brutality used in the film to catch Millie L. The film hooks the audience due to the enigma and the shot snappy clips that keep the audience on their toes. They are also gripped due to the feel of mystery of the first clip of the dark, cold, creepy room with an image of a innocent young girl.

Within our opening sequence two titles were displayed; Hill Limitless and Levine Loops. There were six titles and credits displayed within the opening sequence. The images that were prioritised in the opening sequence included the dark room in which contained the binboard, two computers one with coding on and the other with images of Millie L and the final prioritised image was of Ollie H holding up a camera. The connotations the images carry is that some poor girl is being watched, the audience learn this from when Millie L is featured next to a map on a pinboard, they may also recognize this when her face is featured again on the computer screens and finally when Ollie H is holding up the camera. That is when it is confirmed to the audience that this young woman is being watched.

The genre (psychiatric thriller) is reinforced by the fast pace editing and small clips all put together. It is also reinforced by the use of sound; the pulse, the screams, the action music and the mysterious voice over are the start in which ends with "catch her". From that the audience would have fully collected that someone is after this girl and their intentions with the girl are not good making this a thriller. The strategies myself and my group used to make sure this hit the target audience is use pinterest boards. We used to boards to ensure that we recognised what we wanted are film to look like or what is what have been categorised as. We have used all forms of technology extremely efficiently. Editing software premiere pro was used to put our clips and sounds all together. We all used a measure of camera angles and multiple different platforms to create images for the film for example powerpoint, we also took advantage of the use of streaming platforms. Within one of the opening scenes we see someone coding the video that appeared on the laptop was taken off youtube to ensure the realism.

The film establishes enigma from the outset by how the audience perceive it. We focused very much on deciding how we want the film to look, we wanted to create the same enigma as some shows and movies similar such as: 'You' which is by netflix and 'You get me' also created by netflix. Which has the enigma which is a character becoming obsessed and fascinated with another so much so they have to stalk them just to feel close. The strategies my group and I used to hit our target audience is what I had previously mentioned of pinterest pinboards in which we created a whole outlook of what we wanted our film to be. That is how we hit our target audience by recognising the same story line and certain aesthetics of films and shows we liked.

CREATIVE CRITICAL REFLECTION 1: How does your film opening represent social groups or issues?

The social groups that would be attracted to watching we found through pinterest. We discovered a pattern in popular shows and films that were popular and decided to use the same sounds, storyline, lighting and editing. To then hit the specific social group. Psychological thrillers are the most intellectually demanding of all the thriller sub-genres, and are therefore often aimed at older, adult audiences, often aging from 25 onwards. The confusing twists and turns and mature themes of psychological thrillers story lines may be too much to handle for younger audiences. We wanted this film to be aimed at all genders, we also wanted to attract a younger audience for which we then used younger actors and characters. For example Millie L played a teenage girl still in school. This will broaden the target audience to a younger age group 15+. The issues we highlighted were related to the Sarah Everard being stalked then kidnapped by someone she believed she could trust. We wanted to show the issues of younger girls being vulnerable and being stalked and make uncomfortable. We presented this through a lot of shots of Millie L being followed and then eventually chased by Ollie H.

SOCIAL GROUPS AND ISSUES

I used the app, Pinterest, to identify categories included in my film opening such as identifying social groups and issues. This gave me visual ideas and inspiration e.g locations.

Theme

Issues

Location

From ideas taken from pintrest I created boards and I could then create the visual of what I want from my phone. I discovered the location of which I would like to have filmed, I found social issues that are very present within today's society. The locations selected are dimly lit and appear isolated creating a creepy atmosphere. The boards similar to my film opening have the perfect atmosphere and highlight current issues within society in which creates awareness. My group and I had props within the boards, in which included: brain scans from a MRI scan, criminal weapons, crime scene boards and thriller book covers. Overall I created a visual representation of what I wanted my film to look like and what it would contain. Meaning my production company would be more likely to achieve and create a better film opening.
